Working to improve conditions for platypus should be
a basic element in catchment management throughout the species' range. But
how can we help platypus in our waterway if we're not even sure they live
there?
Platypus can be very difficult to spot in the wild.
A few hints on platypus spotting are given to improve your chances of seeing one.
Once seen they are rarely forgotten. Accordingly, developing
a Platypus Watch project, based on collecting past and present records of platypus
sightings, can be an important first step in community monitoring of local
platypus populations. Depending on the results of this exercise, specific
observational sessions can be
organised.
When a preliminary picture has been formulated, consideration
can be given to a live-trapping survey program by professional biologists to ascertain a detailed view of
the status and distribution of the population.
