SPONSOR A PLATYPUS
If you would like to help platypus research and conservation, why not sponsor a platypus?
Platypus sponsorships also make great gifts for all your family and friends.
For each platypus that you sponsor
you will receive:
*
A sponsorship certificate, bearing
your name (or name of person you designate, if intended as a gift), a scanned
picture and description of the sponsored platypus and information about
the study area in which the platypus lives.
* A blank platypus
greetings card.
There are currently four platypus
that you can sponsor:
DOUBLE TROUBLE
This little platypus had two lucky
escapes. She was first rescued by a passer-by from the jaws of a dog.
Unfortunately, the rescuer then made a common mistake - placing the tiny
animal in a large tub of cold water for the night. By the time she was
finally transferred to the Conservancy, the young platypus was soaked through
to the skin and almost lifeless. However, after some expert care, she recovered
rapidly and was ready to be released back to the wild.
FIREFLY
Firefly is a survivor of the bushfire and floods
that had such a severe impact on the rivers of Gippsland in eastern
Victoria.
She was in excellent condition when first encountered, so hopefully she will breed
successfully over the next few summers and her offspring will help the recovery of
platypus populations in the region.
MUDDY
Muddy was recorded as a juvenile during a
monitoring survey in April 2006 along Muddy Creek, a tributary of Cardinia Creek.
A reintroduction program had commenced in 2004 in Cardinia Creek.
Finding Muddy was especially exciting as he provided the first evidence
that this new population is reproducing.
PUMPER ONE
Pumper One, along with his presumed twin brother,
was first recorded as a juvenile in atributary of the
Snowy River
, near the Buchan pumping station.
This was close to where two baby platypus had been accidentally unearthed by a farmer
from a nursery burrow a few years previously.
Unhappily, those young babies did not survive.
However, Pumper One and Pumper Two were in excellent condition and look
destined to take their place in this important population.
